Saudi SIM Card for Umrah 2026 — Which to Buy and How to Set Up

Last updated: June 2026

Your phone is not just a convenience during Umrah — it is essential. The Nusuk app (mandatory for Rawdah and Umrah permits), navigation between sites, Uber and Careem for transport, staying in touch with family, and accessing offline prayer times all require your phone to function properly. Without a working data connection, your Umrah logistics become significantly harder.

This guide covers all your Saudi SIM card options — including eSIMs you can buy before leaving home, the three major Saudi networks, and exactly how much data you need.

Do You Need a Saudi SIM Card?

Short answer: Yes, strongly recommended.

International roaming on your Indian or US SIM card in Saudi Arabia is extremely expensive — typically ₹10-30 per MB in India, which means a single map navigation session could cost hundreds of rupees. For 7-10 days in Saudi Arabia, roaming charges can easily exceed the cost of a local SIM or eSIM many times over.

A Saudi SIM card or eSIM gives you:

  • Affordable local data (1-2GB for SAR 20-50)
  • Local calling for transport and hotels
  • Reliable network coverage inside and around the Haram

Option 1: Buy a Saudi SIM Card at the Airport

Saudi Arabia’s three major networks — Zain, STC (Saudi Telecom), and Mobily — all have kiosks at Jeddah King Abdulaziz International Airport and Madinah Prince Mohammad bin Abdulaziz Airport.

Our recommendation: STC or Zain. STC has the most comprehensive coverage, including inside the Haram buildings where signal can be weak. Zain offers competitive pricing for similar quality.

Where to Buy at the Airport

Airport SIM kiosks are located in the arrivals hall of both Jeddah and Madinah airports. Look for the branded carrier kiosks immediately after clearing customs. Staff speak basic English and are accustomed to helping pilgrims.

What to bring: Your passport (required for SIM registration in Saudi Arabia — all SIMs must be registered to a passport number).

Cost: SAR 30-70 for a tourist SIM with adequate data for a 7-10 day trip (approximately ₹700-1,600 / $8-19).

Setup time: 10-20 minutes at the kiosk. Staff will set up the SIM for you.

Option 2: Buy an eSIM Before Leaving Home (Best Option)

An eSIM is a digital SIM card you purchase and install on your phone before you travel — no physical card required, no airport queues, active the moment you land.

This is the best option for most pilgrims because:

  • Active instantly upon landing in Saudi Arabia
  • No time spent at airport SIM kiosks (important when you are tired after a long flight)
  • Often cheaper than airport SIM prices
  • Can keep your regular number active on the same phone (dual SIM)

How to Buy an eSIM for Saudi Arabia

Airalo is the most widely used eSIM marketplace. They offer Saudi Arabia eSIM plans from multiple providers:

  • 1GB / 7 days: approximately $4.50
  • 3GB / 30 days: approximately $9
  • 10GB / 30 days: approximately $19

Visit airalo.com, search “Saudi Arabia”, compare plans, and install the eSIM directly to your phone before you travel.

Other eSIM providers for Saudi Arabia:

  • Holafly: Good coverage, slightly higher prices
  • Nomad: Competitive pricing, reliable

Check eSIM compatibility first: Not all phones support eSIM. Go to your phone’s settings and check if eSIM is available. Most phones made after 2019 support eSIM — but budget Android phones may not.

How Much Data Do You Need?

For a typical 7-10 day Umrah trip:

ActivityData Used
Nusuk app (downloading permits, using daily)~50-100MB
Google Maps / navigation~200-400MB per day
WhatsApp (text + voice)~100-200MB per day
Uber / Careem booking~20-50MB per day
Browsing and general use~200-400MB per day
Total per day~600MB-1GB
Total for 7-10 days~5-10GB

Recommendation: Get at least 5GB for a 7-day trip. 10GB gives you comfortable headroom. Do not get less than 3GB — you will run out.

Setting Up Nusuk App on Saudi Data

The Nusuk app works on any data connection. However, a specific issue many pilgrims face: the Nusuk app sometimes fails to load inside the Haram buildings due to network congestion from millions of users.

Our strongest tip: Always screenshot your Nusuk QR code permits and save them offline on your phone. Do not rely on loading the Nusuk app live at the Rawdah or Haram entrance — have the QR code saved in your photo gallery.

Staying in Touch With Family Back Home

WhatsApp works seamlessly on Saudi SIM data. For international calls home, use:

  • WhatsApp voice calls (free over data)
  • WhatsApp video calls (use WiFi when available in hotel to save data)

Your Saudi SIM will work for receiving SMS messages from your bank (important for card payments) and from your home operator.

Can You Use Your Regular SIM With Roaming?

India (Jio, Airtel, Vi): International roaming is available but extremely expensive for data. A dedicated Saudi SIM or eSIM is much more cost-effective.

USA (AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon): T-Mobile’s Magenta plans include international data in 215+ countries including Saudi Arabia. Check if your plan includes it — if so, you may not need a separate SIM.

UK (EE, Vodafone, O2): Post-Brexit, most UK operators charge international roaming fees in Saudi Arabia. An eSIM is more economical for most UK users.
