Wudu (ablution) is the ritual purification a Muslim performs before prayer. Without valid wudu, the prayer is not accepted — the Prophet ﷺ said the prayer of one who has not performed wudu is not valid. This guide walks you through the correct steps in order, what breaks wudu, and the common mistakes beginners make.
The core of wudu comes directly from the Qur’an: “O you who believe, when you rise for prayer, wash your faces and your hands up to the elbows, wipe your heads, and wash your feet to the ankles.” (Surah al-Ma’idah 5:6)
The Steps of Wudu (In Order)
Wudu must be performed in this order, without long pauses between steps:
1. Make the intention (Niyyah). This is in the heart — you intend to perform wudu to purify yourself for prayer. No spoken words are required.
2. Say “Bismillah.” Begin in the name of Allah.
3. Wash both hands up to the wrists — three times. Start with the right, then the left. Wash between the fingers.
4. Rinse the mouth — three times. Take water in your right hand and swish thoroughly.
5. Rinse the nose — three times. Sniff a little water into the nostrils with the right hand and blow it out with the left. Don’t inhale too hard.
6. Wash the face — three times. From the hairline to the chin, and from ear to ear.
7. Wash the arms up to and including the elbows — three times. Right arm first, then left. Make sure water covers the whole forearm and elbow.
8. Wipe the head (Masah) — once. With wet hands, wipe from the front of the head to the back and return. This is a wipe, not a wash — you don’t need to drench the hair.
9. Wipe the ears — once. Using the same wetness, wipe the inside of the ears with the index fingers and the backs with the thumbs.
10. Wash the feet up to and including the ankles — three times. Right foot first, then left. Wash between the toes.
That completes wudu. Many recite the Shahada afterward: “Ashhadu an la ilaha illallah, wa ashhadu anna Muhammadan ‘abduhu wa rasuluh.”
Which Parts Are Obligatory vs Recommended?
Not every step above is strictly obligatory — some are the confirmed Sunnah that perfect the wudu.
Obligatory (Fard) — from the Qur’an:
- Washing the face
- Washing the arms to the elbows
- Wiping the head
- Washing the feet to the ankles
- (And, per most schools, doing them in order without long gaps)
Sunnah (recommended) — from the Prophet’s practice:
- Saying Bismillah, washing the hands first, rinsing mouth and nose, wiping the ears, and repeating washes three times.
If you complete only the obligatory parts, your wudu is valid — but performing the full Sunnah method is how the Prophet ﷺ taught us and carries greater reward.
(Note: schools of thought differ slightly on some details, such as the exact ruling on order and intention. This guide follows the mainstream method; consult a scholar of your school for specifics.)
What Breaks Wudu?
Your wudu is invalidated by:
- Using the toilet (urine, stool) or passing wind
- Deep sleep (lying down)
- Loss of consciousness
- (According to some schools) direct skin contact with the opposite gender with desire, or touching the private parts
Once wudu is broken, you must perform it again before your next prayer. If it’s still valid from a previous prayer, you may pray again without renewing it.
Wudu Over Socks (Masah on Khuffayn)
If you put socks or leather footwear on while in a state of wudu, then when you renew wudu later you may wipe over the socks instead of washing the feet — once over the top of each foot. This is a genuine concession from the Sunnah, valid for a day (or three days for travellers), as long as you had wudu when you put them on.
Common Wudu Mistakes to Avoid
- Rushing and missing a spot — even a fingernail-sized dry patch on an obligatory area invalidates the wudu. Cover every part fully.
- Drenching the head instead of wiping — the head is wiped once, not washed.
- Breaking the order — do the steps in sequence; jumping around is a mistake in most schools.
- Long pauses — wudu should flow in one sitting, not spread out with gaps.
- Wasting water — the Sunnah is to use water sparingly, even beside a flowing river.
For women specifically
- Remove nail polish before wudu — most polish blocks water from reaching the nail, invalidating wudu. (Henna/mehndi is fine — it stains but doesn’t form a barrier.)
- Ensure water reaches the scalp during masah if you have thick hair.
- Remove rings/bangles if they prevent water reaching the skin.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are the steps of wudu in order? Intention, Bismillah, wash hands, rinse mouth, rinse nose, wash face, wash arms to elbows, wipe head, wipe ears, wash feet to ankles.
What breaks wudu? Using the toilet, passing wind, deep sleep, loss of consciousness, and (per some schools) certain contact. After any of these, renew your wudu before praying.
Do I need a new wudu for every prayer? No — if your wudu is still valid from before, you may pray again. You only renew it once it’s broken.
Is saying Bismillah required for wudu? It is a confirmed Sunnah rather than obligatory in most schools — the wudu is valid without it, but saying it follows the Prophet’s ﷺ practice.
Can I do wudu with socks on? Yes — if you had wudu when you put clean socks/footwear on, you may wipe over them when renewing wudu, rather than washing the feet.
