For Malaysian Muslims who want to self-book Umrah without a package
Most Malaysians perform Umrah through travel agents — Tabung Haji Travel, travel companies, and licensed operators are deeply embedded in Malaysian Umrah culture. But here’s what’s changed: Malaysians can now self-book Umrah entirely online, just like pilgrims from the US, UK, or Singapore. No agent required.
This guide is for Malaysians who want to do it themselves — whether to save money, have flexibility, or simply prefer the independence of planning their own sacred journey.
The key change: tourist visa for Malaysians
Malaysian passport holders are eligible for the Saudi tourist e-visa, which explicitly permits Umrah. This is the same visa type used by citizens of the US, UK, EU, and Singapore.
How to apply:
- Go to visa.visitsaudi.com
- Select Malaysia as your nationality
- Fill in your passport details
- Upload a recent photo (white background)
- Pay the fee: approximately RM 700–750 (SAR 600–650, including mandatory health insurance)
- Approved within minutes to 72 hours
This means: You do not need a travel agent for your visa. You can apply yourself, get approved within hours, and proceed to book your own flights and hotels — just like booking any international holiday.
After getting your visa, register on the Nusuk app (nusuk.sa) to book your Rawdah appointment in Madinah and your Umrah permit for Makkah. Both are now mandatory.
Flights from Malaysia to Saudi Arabia
Malaysia has excellent flight connections to Saudi Arabia from KLIA and KLIA2.
From Kuala Lumpur (KUL/KLI A):
| Airline | Route | Approx. return fare (economy) |
|---|---|---|
| Malaysia Airlines (MAS Amal) | KUL → Madinah or Jeddah | RM 2,000–3,500 |
| Saudia (Saudi Airlines) | KUL → Jeddah or Madinah | RM 1,800–3,000 |
| AirAsia X | KUL → Jeddah | RM 1,200–2,500 |
| Emirates | KUL → Jeddah via Dubai | RM 1,800–3,000 |
| Qatar Airways | KUL → Jeddah via Doha | RM 1,700–2,800 |
| flydubai | KUL → Madinah via Dubai | RM 1,500–2,800 |
Malaysia Airlines Amal deserves special mention. It is a dedicated service for pilgrims — Talbiyah is broadcast as you board, prayer times are announced on the flight, and the service is tailored for Umrah travelers. For many Malaysian Muslims, this is the most spiritually meaningful way to begin the journey.
AirAsia X is the budget option — fares can be extremely competitive if you book early, though you’ll need to pay separately for checked baggage.
Fly Madinah first: Most Malaysian Umrah travelers follow the Madinah-first route, spending 4–5 days in Madinah before traveling to Makkah. This is also practically convenient as it means you don’t need to be in Ihram on the plane.
Cost breakdown in Ringgit: 10-day Umrah from Kuala Lumpur
Solo traveler (mid-range)
| Expense | RM |
|---|---|
| Return flights (KUL → MED / JED → KUL) | 2,500 |
| Saudi tourist e-visa | 720 |
| Hotel Madinah — 4 nights, Zone B (RM 240/night) | 960 |
| Hotel Makkah — 5 nights, Zone B with shuttle (RM 300/night) | 1,500 |
| Bus Madinah → Makkah (SAPTCO, ~RM 80) | 80 |
| Food 10 days (RM 80/day) | 800 |
| Local transport (Careem/Uber) | 250 |
| Saudi SIM card | 55 |
| Miscellaneous + souvenirs | 600 |
| Total | ~RM 7,465 |
Compared to Malaysian Umrah packages: Licensed Umrah travel companies in Malaysia typically charge RM 8,000–RM 20,000+ per person for a full package including flights, hotel, and agent fees. Self-booking saves you RM 1,000–RM 12,000+ depending on what you choose.
Tabung Haji Travel packages start from around RM 6,000–RM 7,000 for economy packages. At the budget end the savings are smaller, but you gain complete control over your schedule, hotel choice, and pace.
Malaysian-specific practical tips
Malay food in Saudi Arabia: You will not struggle with food in Makkah and Madinah. There are Indonesian and Malaysian restaurants near both Harams — especially in the Abraj Al-Bait Complex (Clock Tower) food court and Sofwah Tower, where D’Saji Malaysian Restaurant serves teh tarik and familiar Malay dishes. Pakistani and Indian food is everywhere and very similar to what Malaysians enjoy.
Zamzam water: Malaysia Airlines and most carriers allow 5 litres of Zamzam water as part of your checked baggage allowance on the return journey. Emirates also allows this via Dubai. Check your airline policy before packing. Zamzam containers are available for purchase near the Haram.
Currency: 1 SAR ≈ RM 1.17 (verify before travel). Pay by card where possible — CIMB Visa and Maybank cards generally work. Alternatively, exchange RM to SAR at a money changer before travel (often better rates than airport exchange).
Phone: Buy a Saudi SIM card at the airport (Stc, Zain, or Mobily — approximately RM 55 for 30 days of data). Essential for Careem/Uber. Alternatively, some Malaysian telcos (Celcom, Digi, Maxis) offer roaming packages, but local SIM is usually cheaper for a 10-day trip.
Nusuk app language: Available in Malay as well as English and Arabic.
Rawdah permit: Book this as soon as your visa is issued. Slots fill within seconds of opening — especially for the most sought-after time slots. Many Malaysian pilgrims report checking the app daily for available slots during Madinah stay.
The growing Malaysian DIY Umrah community
Self-booking Umrah is not new for Malaysians. There is an active online community of Malaysian DIY Umrah travelers sharing tips on platforms like Facebook groups, travel blogs, and YouTube. Searches for “umrah diy malaysia” and “umrah tanpa pakej” (Umrah without package) have grown significantly since Saudi Arabia opened the tourist e-visa.
The key advantages for Malaysians who self-book:
- Complete flexibility — pray when you want, stay as long as you want at the mosque
- Hotel choice — pick the distance and shuttle that suits your family
- Significant cost savings, especially for families
- The deep satisfaction of having organised your own journey to the House of Allah
Alhamdulillah, may Allah grant you the tawfiq to make this journey and accept your Umrah. Ameen.
