Zamzam Water on the Plane: How Much Can You Bring Home? (2026)

Every pilgrim returning from Umrah wants to bring Zamzam water home — for family, for friends, for those who could not make the journey. And every pilgrim has the same question before they leave: how much can I actually take on the plane?

The rules around Zamzam water on aircraft are specific — and have changed several times in recent years. This guide gives you the accurate 2026 rules, airline by airline, with tips on the best containers and how to pack without leakage.

The Short Answer

You can bring Zamzam water home. The amount allowed depends entirely on your airline and whether it is in checked baggage or hand luggage.

In checked baggage: Most airlines allow Zamzam water as part of your standard checked baggage allowance — typically up to 5 litres per person, sometimes more.

In hand luggage (carry-on): Standard airport security rules apply — liquids in hand luggage are limited to 100ml per container in a clear plastic bag (the standard rule in most countries). Zamzam water is not exempt from this rule at non-Saudi airports.

Important: Saudi airports (Jeddah King Abdulaziz, Madinah Prince Mohammad bin Abdulaziz) have historically allowed passengers to carry Zamzam water through security in sealed official containers. Rules at Saudi departure airports are more permissive than at transit or destination airports.

Airline-by-Airline Rules (2026)

Jazeera Airways (Our Outbound Airline — Bangalore to Madinah via Kuwait)

Jazeera Airways permits Zamzam water in checked baggage as part of your standard 30kg allowance. There is no special separate Zamzam allowance.

Our experience: We purchased sealed 5-litre Zamzam water containers sold near Masjid al-Haram and packed them in our checked bags, wrapped tightly in plastic bags and surrounded by clothes. They arrived without leakage.

Important note for Jazeera: Because we flew via Kuwait (connecting flight), we had to ensure our Zamzam was in checked baggage only — connecting through a non-Saudi airport means strict liquid restrictions apply at the Kuwait transfer.

Gulf Air (Our Return Airline — Jeddah to Bangalore via Bahrain)

Gulf Air similarly allows Zamzam in checked baggage within your standard allowance. Confirm with Gulf Air’s current baggage policy before travel as this can change seasonally.

Our experience: We checked 5 litres per person in our luggage (15 litres for three passengers) with no issues at check-in.

Saudi Airlines (Saudia) — The Most Generous Zamzam Policy

Saudia is the only airline with a genuinely special Zamzam arrangement, because it is Saudi Arabia’s national carrier and carries more pilgrims than any other airline.

The policy: Saudia has historically allowed one sealed 5-litre Zamzam container per passenger free of charge, in addition to your standard checked baggage allowance on flights departing from Jeddah and Madinah. The container must be the official sealed type purchased at the airport or from authorised sellers — not a container you filled yourself.

How it works in practice: At Jeddah and Madinah airports, official sealed 5-litre Zamzam boxes are sold in the departure area (look for the Zamzam counters before check-in). You purchase the box (around SAR 10–15), present it at the Saudia check-in desk, and it is tagged and loaded separately from your baggage — no weight deducted from your allowance.

Important caveats:

The free allowance applies to the sealed airport boxes only. Zamzam packed inside your suitcase counts toward your normal baggage weight like any other airline.
The policy has changed several times over the years and can vary by route and season. Confirm on saudia.com or with Saudia’s call centre before your travel date — do not rely on what applied to another pilgrim last year.
On Saudia flights within your home country (codeshare or connecting domestic legs), the receiving airline’s rules may apply for the onward journey.

If you have a choice of airlines for your return flight and bringing home the maximum Zamzam matters to you, Saudia’s policy is the strongest reason to choose them.

Wizz Air (Budget Flights from Europe)

Wizz Air now flies to Jeddah and Madinah from several European cities, and many UK and European pilgrims use it for cheap Umrah fares. But Zamzam on Wizz Air needs careful planning, because it is an ultra-low-cost carrier.

The key difference: Wizz Air’s basic fare includes no checked baggage at all — only a small cabin bag. Checked baggage (20kg, 26kg, or 32kg) must be purchased separately, and prices are much higher at the airport than online in advance.

What this means for your Zamzam:

There is no special or free Zamzam allowance on Wizz Air. Your Zamzam travels as part of the checked baggage you have paid for, full stop.
5 litres of Zamzam = roughly 5–6kg of your paid allowance. If you bought only a 20kg bag and it’s already full of luggage and shopping, your Zamzam won’t fit — and excess baggage fees at the airport are severe.
Buy your checked baggage allowance online before travel, and size it with Zamzam in mind: if you plan to bring 5 litres per person, the 26kg or 32kg option is the safer choice.
Sealed airport Zamzam boxes are not accepted as free extra items at Wizz Air check-in — they are weighed like everything else.

Cabin bag warning: Do not attempt to carry Zamzam in your Wizz Air cabin bag. Standard 100ml liquid rules apply at security, and Wizz Air’s cabin bag size limits are strictly enforced — a 5-litre container will be refused at the gate even if it somehow cleared security.

Bottom line for Wizz Air pilgrims: the ticket is cheap, but budget an extra 6kg of paid checked allowance per person for your Zamzam. Even with that cost added, the total usually still beats full-service fares — you just have to plan it before you reach the airport.

Air India

Permits Zamzam water in checked baggage within the standard allowance. 5 litres per person is a practical amount within typical checked baggage weight.

Emirates, Etihad, Qatar Airways

All permit Zamzam in checked baggage within standard allowance. Because these routes involve non-Saudi connections (Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Doha), Zamzam must be in checked baggage only — not transferred between flights as a liquid in carry-on.

IndiGo (for domestic India connections)

If you are connecting on an IndiGo domestic flight after your international arrival, standard Indian domestic liquid rules apply. Zamzam in sealed containers can travel in checked baggage on domestic legs.

Is Zamzam Counted in Your Checked Baggage Allowance?

Yes — in almost all cases.

Unless your airline specifically offers a free Zamzam allowance (Saudia has done this at times), Zamzam water weight counts toward your standard checked baggage limit.

Practical calculation:

5 litres of water weighs approximately 5 kg
A 5-litre container itself weighs approximately 500g-1kg
Three passengers at 5 litres each = 15+ kg of your baggage allowance

Budget for this: If your standard allowance is 30kg per person (as it was with Jazeera Airways for our trip), taking 5 litres of Zamzam leaves 24-25kg for everything else. Plan your clothing and shopping accordingly.

Best Containers for Zamzam Water

Sealed containers sold near the Haram (Recommended)

Sealed, purpose-made Zamzam water containers are sold throughout the shops surrounding Masjid al-Haram and Masjid an-Nabawi. Sizes range from 1 litre to 10 litres.

Why these are best:

Purpose-made for travel — thicker plastic, secure seal
Clearly labelled as Zamzam water
No leakage if sealed correctly

Cost: SAR 5-20 depending on size — very affordable.

Buying your own containers from home (Alternative)

You can also bring your own clean, sturdy, food-grade plastic containers and fill them at the Zamzam taps inside the Haram yourself.

Zamzam taps inside Masjid al-Haram: Located throughout the mosque — both inside the main prayer halls and in the outdoor Mataf area. Look for the green tap stations clearly marked “Zamzam.” These are free to use.

Container recommendations for home-purchase:

Use thick, screw-top plastic containers (not thin bottles)
Avoid containers with flip-top lids — these can open in checked baggage
Amazon sells travel-specific liquid containers that are suitable

How to Pack Zamzam Without Leakage

This is the practical advice that every pilgrim needs:

Double-seal every container: After filling and sealing, wrap the cap area tightly with cling film (plastic wrap), then tape over it with strong packing tape.
Place in a sealed plastic bag: Put each container in a thick zip-lock bag. If it leaks, it leaks into the bag — not your clothes.
Pack upright where possible: Place containers upright in your suitcase with soft items (clothes, towels) packed tightly around them to prevent movement.
Pack a change of clothes in your hand luggage: In the (rare) event of a significant leak in checked baggage, you want clean clothes accessible in your carry-on.
Do not overfill: Leave a small air gap at the top of each container — liquid expands in the pressurised aircraft hold.

Can You Take Zamzam in Hand Luggage?

Departing from Saudi Arabia (Jeddah, Madinah, Riyadh): Saudi airport security has historically allowed sealed Zamzam water containers from official Saudi sources through security. The official Saudi position is that Zamzam is a religious item and is treated differently from ordinary liquids. In practice, many pilgrims have successfully taken sealed small Zamzam containers through Jeddah and Madinah security.

However: This is not guaranteed, can change, and depends on the security officer. Do not rely on hand luggage for your main Zamzam supply — keep your main quantity in checked baggage.

At transit airports (Kuwait, Bahrain, Dubai, etc.): Standard 100ml liquid rules apply strictly. Any Zamzam in hand luggage above 100ml will be confiscated. Never put your Zamzam in hand luggage if you have a transit stop outside Saudi Arabia.

Arriving at your home country: Zamzam water may be brought through customs without any special declaration required in most countries (India, USA, UK, Canada, Australia). It is not a commercial product and is not subject to import restrictions in these countries.

How Long Does Zamzam Water Last?

Zamzam water does not have a strict expiry date when stored properly. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Most pilgrims keep it refrigerated and use it within 12 months.

Where to Collect Zamzam Inside the Haram

Masjid al-Haram, Makkah: Green tap stations are throughout the mosque — ground floor, first floor, and in the Mataf (outdoor Tawaf) area. These are clearly marked “Zamzam Water” in English and Arabic.

Masjid an-Nabawi, Madinah: Zamzam taps are also available inside Masjid an-Nabawi, distributed throughout the prayer halls. The same water is available.
