Umrah for Women — Complete 2026 Guide (Rules, Mahram, Periods & Rites)

Umrah for women follows the same four core rites as for men — Ihram, Tawaf, Sa’i, and cutting the hair — but there are important differences women should know before travelling: the mahram rules, what to wear, how the Talbiyah is recited, what to do if your period starts, and how the hair-cutting step works.

This guide answers all of it plainly, drawing on our own family trip and the current 2026 Saudi regulations.

One note first: the practical Saudi travel rules and the religious ruling for your situation are two different things. Saudi immigration rules are covered below as they currently stand; for the religious ruling that applies to you, consult a scholar of your own school of thought. This guide focuses on the practical side.

Can a Woman Perform Umrah Without a Mahram?

Yes. <cite>Saudi Arabia lifted the mahram requirement for women of all ages, allowing them to travel for Umrah on their own or with a trusted group.</cite> Before September 2019, a woman needed a male guardian (mahram) to obtain a visa and enter the Kingdom; that requirement has been removed for Umrah.

A mahram is a close male relative a woman cannot marry — her father, brother, son, husband, or uncle. Traditionally he travelled with her for safety and support.

What this means today:

Women can travel for Umrah solo or in a group, of any age, under current Saudi rules.
There are no longer immigration penalties for travelling without a mahram for Umrah.
Some nationalities or visa categories may still have specific conditions — always confirm your exact eligibility for your passport and visa type at the time of booking.

Important distinction — the religious view: while Saudi Arabia permits mahram-free travel, Islamic scholars differ on whether it is advisable, and the schools of thought vary. Many contemporary scholars allow women to travel safely in organised groups; others emphasise the traditional ruling. This is a matter to settle with a qualified scholar for your own circumstances — the Saudi rule and the fiqh ruling are not the same thing.

Can a Wife Go for Umrah Without Her Husband’s Permission?

This is a religious question rather than a Saudi immigration one. The common scholarly position is that for obligatory acts a wife’s situation differs from voluntary acts, and Umrah is voluntary (Sunnah) for most. Many scholars hold that a wife should have her husband’s agreement for a voluntary journey. Because views differ by school and situation, this is exactly the kind of question to put to a trusted local scholar rather than settle from a blog. What we can say practically: most women travel for Umrah with full family agreement, often as part of a family group as we did.

What Should a Woman Wear for Umrah?

There is no special Ihram garment for women — unlike men, who wear two white unstitched cloths. A woman’s Ihram is simply modest, ordinary clothing.

In the state of Ihram, a woman:

Wears normal modest clothes that cover the body (many wear a plain abaya, but any modest dress works).
Covers the hair, but leaves the face and hands uncovered. A niqab that touches the face is avoided during Ihram (privacy from non-mahram men can still be maintained by other means).
Avoids perfume, makeup, and jewellery while in Ihram, as scent and adornment are part of what Ihram sets aside.
May wear any colour — the white-cloth rule is for men; women are not restricted to white.

Outside Ihram, during the rest of the trip: dress modestly throughout your stay. An abaya isn’t legally required for foreign women in Saudi Arabia, but in Makkah and Madinah it’s expected and makes daily life simpler.

Can You Wear Makeup During Umrah?

During Ihram, no — makeup and perfume are avoided, as Ihram is a state stripped of adornment and scent. Outside the state of Ihram (before entering Ihram, or after completing Umrah), normal grooming resumes, though modesty in the holy cities is always the guide. Note that many cosmetics are scented, which is the specific issue during Ihram — unscented basic skincare is fine.

How Does a Woman Recite the Talbiyah?

The Talbiyah is the same words for everyone:

Labbayk Allahumma Labbayk. Labbayka la sharika laka labbayk. Innal-hamda wan-ni’mata laka wal-mulk. La sharika lak.

The difference is volume: men are required to say it loudly, while women recite it softly so that only they can hear. This same principle — women reciting quietly in mixed public space — applies to other spoken supplications during the rites.

Umrah and Your Period — What to Do If Menstruation Starts

This is the single most common worry for women planning Umrah, and it’s completely manageable. The key ruling: Tawaf requires a state of purity, so a menstruating woman cannot perform Tawaf — but she can do almost everything else.

The Prophet ﷺ reassured Aisha (RA) when she menstruated during pilgrimage: <cite>”This is ordained by Allah for the daughters of Adam. Perform all the pilgrim rituals except Tawaf.”</cite>

If your period starts before you begin Tawaf

You still enter Ihram at the Miqat. Make your niyyah and say the Talbiyah as normal. (Skip the two-rak’ah sunnah prayer, since salah isn’t performed during menstruation.)
You cannot enter Masjid al-Haram or perform Tawaf until your period ends.
Wait it out: stay at your hotel, make dua, read Qur’an from your phone. You remain in Ihram until you can complete the rites.
Once it ends, perform ghusl, then complete Tawaf, Sa’i, and the hair-trim in the normal order.

If your period starts after you complete Tawaf

You have already done the part that requires purity, so you may continue.
<cite>The area between Safa and Marwah is outside the mosque boundary</cite>, so you can perform Sa’i even while menstruating — use the back entrances that don’t pass through the prayer hall.
Then complete the hair-trim to finish.

Practical tip

Some women use doctor-approved tablets to delay their period for the trip, especially for short, tightly-scheduled visits. Discuss this with your doctor well before travel — it’s a personal medical decision, not a religious requirement. If you’d rather not, simply build a little buffer into your itinerary so a delay doesn’t cost you the whole trip.

Important: do not cut your hair to “exit Ihram” early if you’re waiting on your period — trimming before Tawaf and Sa’i are done is an Ihram violation and you remain in Ihram regardless. Complete the rites in order once you’re able.

How Do Women Perform the Four Rites? (Step by Step)

The rites are the same four steps as for men, with the small differences noted:

Ihram — Modest clothing, hair covered, face uncovered; niyyah and the Talbiyah (recited softly).
Tawaf — Seven circuits around the Kaaba, starting and ending at the Black Stone. Women do not perform Ramal (the brisk walk) or Idtiba’ (uncovering a shoulder) — those are for men. Point to the Black Stone from a distance; never push into the crowd.
Sa’i — Seven lengths between Safa and Marwah. Women walk normally throughout; the light jog between the green markers is for men only.
Taqsir (trimming) — A woman gathers her hair and trims about a fingertip’s length (roughly an inch/2–3 cm) from the ends. <cite>Women do not shave their heads</cite> — the Prophet ﷺ forbade women from shaving; trimming is the rule. Even if the hair is short, a small trim is still made to exit Ihram. This completes the Umrah.

Can a Woman Do Umrah Alone?

Yes — under current Saudi rules a woman may perform Umrah alone or in a group. Practically, first-time or less-experienced travellers often feel more comfortable joining a women’s group or a family group, booking a hotel within walking distance of the Haram, and knowing the location of nearby help (hotel desk, clinics, police). Confident, experienced travellers manage solo without difficulty. As always, the religious advisability for your case is a scholar’s question; the Saudi permission is settled.

Practical Tips From Our Family Trip

My wife’s notes from performing Umrah with us in February 2023:

Comfortable, closed footwear for the marble — it can be cold at night and hot by day. Shoes come off at the mosque; a drawstring shoe bag keeps them with you.
A small crossbody or waist bag for phone, Nusuk QR code, and a Zamzam bottle — enough to carry without burden.
Loose, breathable abaya — Makkah warms up fast even in winter months.
Plan Tawaf for off-peak hours (after Isha or before Fajr) — calmer, cooler, and far easier in a crowd.
Keep the Nusuk permit screenshotted offline — the app can struggle to load near the Haram from network congestion.
