Travel in Islam begins with turning to Allah. Before any journey — a flight, a long drive, or the sacred journey of Umrah — the Prophet ﷺ taught us short, powerful supplications to ask for safety, ease, and protection. This guide gives you the authentic travel duas in Arabic, transliteration, and English, with a clear note on when to recite each.
The Main Dua for Travel (Dua for Boarding Transport)
This is the well-known supplication recited when you sit in your car, plane, bus, or any transport, taken from the Sunnah:
Arabic: سُبْحَانَ الَّذِي سَخَّرَ لَنَا هَذَا وَمَا كُنَّا لَهُ مُقْرِنِينَ وَإِنَّا إِلَى رَبِّنَا لَمُنْقَلِبُونَ
Transliteration: Subhanalladhi sakhkhara lana hadha wa ma kunna lahu muqrinin, wa inna ila Rabbina lamunqalibun.
English: “Glory be to Him who has subjected this to us, and we could never have accomplished it (by ourselves). And indeed, to our Lord we will surely return.”
(Based on the Sunnah — the Prophet ﷺ would recite this when setting out, reflecting Surah az-Zukhruf 43:13-14.)
The Complete Travel Dua (Full Sunnah Version)
The Prophet ﷺ would continue with a fuller supplication for the journey ahead:
English meaning: “O Allah, we ask You on this journey of ours for righteousness, piety, and deeds that are pleasing to You. O Allah, make this journey easy for us and fold up for us its distance. O Allah, You are the Companion on the journey and the Guardian of the family. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the hardships of travel, from an unhappy sight, and from an ill-fated return regarding wealth and family.”

Dua When Leaving the House
Before you even begin travelling, there is a dua for stepping out of your home:
Transliteration: Bismillah, tawakkaltu ‘alallah, wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah.
English: “In the name of Allah, I place my trust in Allah, and there is no might nor power except with Allah.”
The Prophet ﷺ taught that whoever says this upon leaving home is guided, protected, and sufficed.
Dua for a Safe Return
Upon returning from a journey, the same boarding dua is recited, with an addition acknowledging the return:
English meaning: “We return, repentant, worshipping our Lord and praising Him.”
Many travellers also add gratitude (Alhamdulillah) for a safe arrival.

When arriving at a new destination, this supplication asks for its good and protection from its harm:
English meaning: “O Allah, Lord of the seven heavens and all they overshadow, Lord of the seven earths and all they carry… I ask You for the good of this town and the good of its people, and I seek refuge in You from its evil and the evil of its people.”
Why We Recite Dua Before Travelling
Travel, however carefully planned, carries uncertainty. Reciting these supplications:
